Workshops

Parent Academy is excited to bring audio and video online material for parents. Starting December 2012 there will be one-hour monthly meetings at the Lincoln Parish Early Childhood Center (801 E. Mississippi - see map below) to discuss questions that arise from watching the online material.

Light snacks provided - children welcome in the play area.

Three-part presentation focusing on Creating Healthy Habits: Dr. Julie Rutledge
  • Creating Healthy Habits - Childhood Obesity: Causes and Consequences
             Everyone knows that obesity is a big problem in America today. These modules will discuss issues related to childhood  
             obesity, such as 
                   - facts about childhood obesity
                   - descriptions of what can cause obesity in children
                   - consequences of being overweight during childhood
  • Creating Healthy Habits - Family Nutrition: The Whats and Hows of Healthy Eating
             "What's for dinner tonight?"--it's a question heard almost daily in millions of houses across America. Feeling tired, stressed, 
             and needing to balance providing healthy food with the month's food budget are feelings  familiar to the parents in those 
             homes. These modules will discuss issues related to family nutrition, such as how to
                   - spot healthy food choices
                   - provide healthy food on a budget
                   - create healthy meals on the run         
  • Creating Healthy Habits - Family Physical Activity: Get Up and Move!
             Sometimes it feels like you don't even have enough time to cook dinner in between work, school, and extracurricular activities
             --how in the world do you find time to be physically active along, much less make it a part of you regular family time? These  
             modules will discuss issues related to family physical activity, such as
                   - why promoting physical activity and engaging in physical activities together as a family are important
                   - tips to start including physical activity into your busy schedules
                   - how to get your family moving even if you don't enjoy physical activity 


Four-part presentation focusing on Stress Management: Dr. Kimberly Corson
  • Stress Management - An Overview of Stress
             "I'm so stressed out!" In the harried American life, we hear this statement quite a bit. This module will discuss an overview of 
             stress, such as 
                   - the definition of stress and how to recognize it
                   - the symptoms of high levels of stress
                   - different ways to interpret stress

                   - good vs. bad stress
                   - different ways to respond to stress
  • Stress Management - Identifying and Interpreting Stressors 
             Our interpretation of a stressful event directly affects the way we respond to it. This module will discuss issues related to 
             identifying and interpreting stressors, such as
                   - how attitude affects our interpretation of the event
                   - how to be more optimistic when faced with stress
                   - how our perception of control affects our interpretation of the stressor

                   - how to feel more in control when faced with stress         
  • Stress Management - Responding Effectively to Stressful Events
            You know you're stressed out, but what are you supposed to do about it? This module will give practical tools for how to 
            effectively manage stress, such as
                   - stress management techniques
                   - getting regular sleep
                   - time management tips

                   - staying healthy through fitness and nutrition
                   - garnering social support
                   - practicing calm responses to stress  
  • Stress Management - Parenting and Stress Management
             Stressed out as a parent? This module will give practical tips for managing parenting stress, such as
                   - taking care of yourself
                   - creating a calm environment
                   - communicating effectively with family members

                   - knowing where to find support


Three-part presentation focusing on Talking about Sexuality with My Child: Dr. Amy Yates
  • Talking about Sexuality with My Child - Teaching My Child about His/Her Body
             The first step in preparing for discussing sexuality with your children is being able to talk with a child about his or her body. 
             This module will address 
                   - using language that young children can understand to discuss their bodies
                   - helping the child to understand ownership and care of his/her body
                   - having discussions with the child to help protect the child from sexual abuse
  • Talking about Sexuality with My Child - "The Birds and The Bees"
             Parents are often worried about being asked questions about sex and sexuality from their children. This module will address
                   - topics to cover with children at different age levels

                   - the importance of parental sex talks to the child's future sexual behaviors
                   - becoming comfortable talking about sex with your child         
  • Talking about Sexuality with My Child - Keeping the Lines of Communication Open
            While initiating discussions about sexuality with children is difficult, it is an important parental responsibility. Continuing to talk 
            with your children as they grow up is vital for their physical and emotional health. This module with address
                   - being prepared for difficult questions
                   - being confident in expressing your beliefs
                   - being the most accurate and safe source for sexual knowledge for your child
