Parent Academy is excited to bring audio and video online material for parents. Starting December 2012 there will be one-hour monthly meetings at the Lincoln Parish Early Childhood Center (801 E. Mississippi - see map below) to discuss questions that arise from watching the online material.

2012-2013 Workshop Descriptions:
Three-part presentation focusing on Creating Healthy Habits: Dr. Julie Rutledge
obesity, such as
- facts about childhood obesity
- descriptions of what can cause obesity in children
- consequences of being overweight during childhood
and needing to balance providing healthy food with the month's food budget are feelings familiar to the parents in those
homes. These modules will discuss issues related to family nutrition, such as how to
- spot healthy food choices
- provide healthy food on a budget
- create healthy meals on the run
--how in the world do you find time to be physically active along, much less make it a part of you regular family time? These
modules will discuss issues related to family physical activity, such as
- why promoting physical activity and engaging in physical activities together as a family are important
- tips to start including physical activity into your busy schedules
- how to get your family moving even if you don't enjoy physical activity
Four-part presentation focusing on Stress Management: Dr. Kimberly Corson
stress, such as
- the definition of stress and how to recognize it
- the symptoms of high levels of stress
- different ways to interpret stress
- good vs. bad stress
- different ways to respond to stress
identifying and interpreting stressors, such as
- how attitude affects our interpretation of the event
- how to be more optimistic when faced with stress
- how our perception of control affects our interpretation of the stressor
- how to feel more in control when faced with stress
effectively manage stress, such as
- stress management techniques
- getting regular sleep
- time management tips
- staying healthy through fitness and nutrition
- garnering social support
- practicing calm responses to stress
- taking care of yourself
- creating a calm environment
- communicating effectively with family members
- knowing where to find support
Three-part presentation focusing on Talking about Sexuality with My Child: Dr. Amy Yates
This module will address
- using language that young children can understand to discuss their bodies
- helping the child to understand ownership and care of his/her body
- having discussions with the child to help protect the child from sexual abuse
- topics to cover with children at different age levels
- the importance of parental sex talks to the child's future sexual behaviors
- becoming comfortable talking about sex with your child
with your children as they grow up is vital for their physical and emotional health. This module with address
- being prepared for difficult questions
- being confident in expressing your beliefs
- being the most accurate and safe source for sexual knowledge for your child
